56 Bollywood Trivia Questions: Films, Stars, Music & Records

56 Bollywood trivia questions across 6 rounds — iconic films, stars, directors, songs, box office records, and classic vs modern era. Copy and host.

Bollywood produces more films in a year than Hollywood and the UK combined. Its stars are more famous than most world leaders across dozens of countries. And yet most trivia nights still give it about three questions squeezed into a "World Cinema" round.

This is the fix for that.

56 Bollywood trivia questions across six rounds — iconic films, stars, directors and composers, songs and music, box office records and awards, and a classic-era-vs-modern decider. Use all six for a full Bollywood night, or pull individual rounds to drop into a wider movies quiz. If you want live multiplayer Bollywood trivia without any hosting setup, Quizzr's Movies quiz has you covered.

How to use this list: For round ordering, team mechanics, and keeping energy high, see the full trivia night hosting guide. Difficulty is rated per question: ★ = most will get this, ★★ = know-your-stuff territory, ★★★ = the ones that separate the fans from the fanatics.

Scoring: 1 point per correct answer. For questions with dates or numbers, decide in advance whether partial credit counts — say so before round one and don't change it mid-game.

A Few Things to Know About Bollywood Trivia

Before you start, here are four facts that will stop arguments before they start — and make you look very prepared when someone challenges an answer.

"Bollywood" doesn't mean all Indian cinema. It refers specifically to Hindi-language films produced in Mumbai (formerly Bombay — that's where the name comes from: Bombay + Hollywood). Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and other regional industries are entirely separate. RRR, for example, is a Telugu film, not Bollywood.

India out-produces every other country by a significant margin. India holds the Guinness World Record for highest annual film output — 1,724 films in 2013 alone, compared to 738 from the United States that year. Indian cinema sells approximately 943 million tickets per year across 35+ languages.

Nobody sings their own songs. Every song in a Bollywood film is pre-recorded by specialist "playback singers." The actors lip-sync to a pre-recorded track. This system made legends of vocalists like Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar, who were household names across South Asia despite rarely appearing on screen.

Some of these questions have wrong "correct answers" floating around online. The Mughal-E-Azam color question and the Bollywood Oscar question are two where popular trivia sites confidently give incorrect answers. The verified answers are below.

Round 1: Name That Film 🎬

The round that starts the arguments

1. Which 2001 film starred Aamir Khan as a poor farmer who challenged British colonizers to a cricket match? ★ Lagaan — directed by Ashutosh Gowariker; nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film

2. What year was Sholay released? ★ 1975 — directed by Ramesh Sippy; widely considered the greatest Indian film ever made

3. Approximately how many weeks did Sholay run continuously at Minerva Cinema, Mumbai? ★★ Around 286 weeks — just over five and a half years, from August 1975 to early 1981

Host tip: Some sources say "five years," some say 286 weeks. Accept either. If anyone says "forever," take the point away on principle.

4. Which 1995 romantic film has screened every single day at Mumbai's Maratha Mandir cinema since its release, now surpassing 1,500 weeks? ★ Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) — the longest theatrical run in the history of world cinema

5. "Chaiyya Chaiyya," one of the most iconic Bollywood sequences ever filmed, was shot entirely on top of a moving train. Which film is it from? ★★ Dil Se (1998) — directed by Mani Ratnam, starring Shah Rukh Khan, choreographed by Farah Khan

Host tip: A lot of people will confidently say DDLJ or Dil Wale. It's Dil Se. The song is also on the Dil Se soundtrack. Both clues point the same way.

6. The word "Bollywood" is a blend of which two words? ★★ Bombay + Hollywood — coined in the mid-1970s; the naming convention was itself borrowed from "Tollywood," the nickname for Bengali cinema, which dates back to 1932

7. Which Indian film was the first to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, reportedly losing by a single vote in 1958? ★★★ Mother India (1957) — directed by Mehboob Khan; India's submission to the 30th Academy Awards

Host tip: People often guess Lagaan here. Lagaan was nominated too — but in 2002, 44 years later. Mother India was first, and both lost.

8. Mughal-E-Azam (1960) is famous for a single Technicolor sequence filmed in colour while the rest of the film remained black-and-white. Which song features in that sequence? ★★★ "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya" — sung by Lata Mangeshkar, filmed on a set representing the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors)

9. Which 2008 Hindi film was the first to cross ₹100 crore at the Indian domestic box office, launching what became known as the "100 Crore Club"? ★★ Ghajini — starring Aamir Khan, directed by A.R. Murugadoss; it crossed the milestone on day 17

10. In 3 Idiots (2009), what is the secret real name of the character everyone calls Rancho? ★★ Phunsukh Wangdu — full screen name: Ranchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad

Host tip: Award a bonus point if anyone can say "Ranchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad" without stumbling. No one will earn it.

Round 2: Star Power 🌟

The round where everyone suddenly becomes a film critic

13. Dilip Kumar holds the all-time record for Filmfare Best Actor wins. Which other actor has exactly matched his tally of 8 wins? ★★ Shah Rukh Khan — both hold 8 wins; Amitabh Bachchan is third with 5

Host tip: Many quiz packs say Dilip Kumar is the sole record holder. He's tied. Accept both names as a correct answer.

17. For Dangal (2016), Aamir Khan played a wrestling coach who had grown heavy in later life. Approximately how heavy did he get at his heaviest for the role? ★★★ 97 kg (approximately 214 lbs) — he then lost the weight to play the younger version of the same character; the dual physical transformation is one of the most extreme in Bollywood history

Host tip: Accept anything between 95 and 100 kg. The exact figure varies by source.

The round for people who actually watch the credits

21. A.R. Rahman is one of the most decorated film composers alive. Which was his first Hindi-language film as composer? ★★ Rangeela (1995) — directed by Ram Gopal Varma; his first film overall was the Tamil Roja (1992)

Host tip: "Roja" is the most common wrong answer here. Roja was his Tamil debut. Rangeela was his first original Hindi score. If you want a clean, unambiguous answer, specify "first Hindi film" in the question.

22. A.R. Rahman won two Academy Awards — Best Original Score and Best Original Song — for which 2008 film? ★★ Slumdog Millionaire — a British-American production directed by Danny Boyle, filmed largely in Mumbai

23. Who directed Lagaan (2001)? ★ Ashutosh Gowariker

27. Who directed Sholay (1975)? ★ Ramesh Sippy

28. In Bollywood, what are the specialist vocalists called who record songs in the studio that on-screen actors then lip-sync to? ★★ Playback singers — the system means the most famous voices (Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi) are often different from the most famous faces

Round 4: Songs & Music 🎵

The round where someone starts humming mid-question

Which female playback singer, known as the "Nightingale of India," recorded over 30,000 songs across a career spanning more than six decades? ★★ Lata Mangeshkar (1929–2022) — she held a Guinness World Record for most songs recorded by any individual; her voice is the defining sound of classic Bollywood

30. "Jai Ho" became an international phenomenon in 2009. Which film is it from? ★ Slumdog Millionaire — composed by A.R. Rahman, sung by Sukhwinder Singh

Host tip: "Jai Ho" is not India's national motto. India's national motto is "Satyameva Jayate" (Truth alone triumphs), from the Mundaka Upanishad. "Jai Ho" is a colloquial phrase. This will come up.

31. India's national motto is "Satyameva Jayate" — True or False? ★ True — it means "Truth alone triumphs." "Jai Ho" and "Jai Hind" are popular slogans, not the official motto.

40. Which Indian film's song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2023 — the first Oscar win for an Indian production in 20 years? ★★ "Naatu Naatu" from RRR — note that RRR is a Telugu film, not a Hindi/Bollywood production; composed by M.M. Keeravani

Host tip: If someone says "Bollywood won an Oscar" — gently note: RRR is Telugu cinema. The distinction matters to a lot of people.

41. The first Indian to win an Academy Award was a costume designer recognised for her work on a British-American historical epic in 1983. Who was she? ★★★ Bhanu Athaiya — she won Best Costume Design for Gandhi (1982), directed by Richard Attenborough

The decider — classic-era fans face off against the new-wave crowd

Host tip: Pakeezah took 14 years to make and Meena Kumari died six weeks after its release. This is one of the most poignant stories in cinema. Worth mentioning if the energy allows.

49. Which Raj Kapoor film became a cultural phenomenon in the Soviet Union in the early 1950s, with its title song becoming a street anthem in Russia and Central Asia? ★★★ Awaara (1951) — one of the earliest demonstrations of Bollywood's remarkable international reach, decades before streaming

50. India's first colour film was released in 1953 — not in 1960, as is commonly assumed. What was that first colour film called? ★★★ Jhansi Ki Rani (1953) — directed by Sohrab Modi, shot entirely in Technicolor; Mughal-E-Azam (1960) had only 4 colour reels in an otherwise black-and-white film

55. Which year did India's economic liberalisation begin — a turning point that eventually transformed Bollywood by enabling multiplexes, foreign investment, and global distribution? ★★★ 1991 — liberalisation gradually replaced single-screen cinemas with multiplexes, changed what films got financed, and opened the industry to international co-productions

56. As of 2025, which film holds the record for the longest single-cinema run in the history of world cinema, still screening at its original Mumbai theatre? ★ Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ, 1995) — now past 1,500 weeks of continuous daily screenings at Maratha Mandir

How to Run a Bollywood Quiz Night

Pre-warn players about the playback singer system. Most audiences unfamiliar with Bollywood don't know that the singing voice and the on-screen face are different people. If you're playing audio clips, say upfront whether you want the singer's name or the actor's name. Both are reasonable answers — you need to specify which one you're asking for.

Let teams pick their own names. "Shah Rukh Khans," "Team Baahubali," "The Lagaan XI" — it sounds small but named teams get more invested in the result. Give them 60 seconds before round one.

Use a song clip to open each round. Even 10 to 15 seconds of a well-known Bollywood track as a round intro changes the atmosphere significantly. Check your venue's licensing situation if this is a commercial event.

Save the myths round for last. Questions 50 and 7 (Mughal-E-Azam colour myth, Mother India vs Lagaan) work best as surprise reveals late in the game. If you lead with them, players spend the rest of the night second-guessing every answer.
